Course Description

The emphasis of this course is on imaginative pre-production for an evolving world of moving images. Acknowledging the rapid changes in the way work is produced and distributed, students will be introduced to diverse historical, theoretical, and practical methods of visual communication as they develop their storytelling skills through creative writing and pre-visualization exercises for animation, game, live action, and new media with an emphasis on inclusion in story and unique experiences.

Programme Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Develop imaginative stories from simple ideas or concepts.
  • Create and visualize compelling characters.
  • Write effectively for established and emerging media in the form of loglines, treatments, short stories, short form screenplays, and game design documents.
  • Demonstrate effective visual storytelling through storyboards, animatics, performance, and other forms of visual communication.
  • Organize ideas and present them effectively in a dynamic project pitch.
  • Document process in a production book or blog.

Eligibility Requirements

  • ALX alumni
  • Have access to laptop and internet connection
  • General Computer skills (e.g., Google Docs, Slides, and some ability to digitize images via photographing or creating digital art directly on a computer in software like Photoshop)
  • Basic Drawing Skills (Ability to draw a relatively representative image of a character, environment, or other asset for storyboarding and visual communication)
